Bitesize: 3 Ways to Self-Mentor This IWD

International Women’s Day is often about looking outward, by finding a mentor, learning from others or building your network.

But one of the most powerful things you can do, especially in busy, demanding roles, is learn how to self-mentor.

Because the reality is, you won’t always have someone guiding you in the moment you need it most.

Drawing on Jo Adams’ practical advice, here are three simple ways to take ownership of your own development this IWD.

1️⃣ Start with Clear Goals (Even If You’re Your Own Mentor)

Great mentoring relationships start with clarity. The same applies when you’re guiding yourself.

Take a step back and ask:

  • What am I working towards right now?
  • What does progress actually look like for me this quarter?

Jo highlights the importance of setting clear goals and being prepared. When you self-mentor, that preparation becomes your responsibility.

Write it down, revisit it regularly and keep it visible.

2️⃣ Hold Yourself Accountable

One of the most underrated parts of mentoring is follow-through.

Doing what you say you will before the next conversation.

When you’re self-mentoring, there’s no one chasing you. Which makes accountability even more important.

Set small, realistic actions and commit to them.

Whether it’s speaking up in a meeting, building a new relationship or carving out time for development, progress comes from consistency, not perfection.

3️⃣ Get Comfortable with Feedback (Even When It’s Internal)

Feedback doesn’t always have to come from someone else.

Jo encourages mentees to not shy away from it. The same applies here.

Pause and reflect:

  • What went well this week?
  • What would I do differently next time?
  • Where am I holding myself back?

Self-awareness is a leadership skill. The more honest you are with yourself, the faster you grow.
