Woman of the Year Finalist Spotlight: Suzannah Moss-Wright
For Suzannah Moss-Wright, the biggest breakthroughs come from asking better questions—and having the courage to prove the answers.
As a finalist in the 2026 Meat Business Women Australia Woman of the Year Award, proudly supported by BOTT Insurance Group, Suzannah has forged an unconventional path that spans international finance, law, agriculture and premium food production.
Today, as the founder of Wagyu Lamb Pty Ltd (trading as Mottainai Lamb), she is challenging traditional thinking about Australian lamb and creating new opportunities for producers, processors and premium export markets.
An unconventional journey
Suzannah grew up in a multi-generational farming family before building an international career in law, environmental policy, energy trading and banking.
After stepping away from corporate leadership to raise her young family, she returned to Australia with a bold vision: to create a premium Australian lamb brand that could compete on the world stage through provenance, innovation and exceptional eating quality.
That vision became Mottainai Lamb.
"I built this because I believe Australia's lamb industry is capable of far more value, and I've spent a decade trying to prove it with data rather than argument."
Since founding the business in 2015, Suzannah has invested in research, developed a patented feeding program and pioneered a production system capable of producing highly marbled lamb while incorporating food waste into the feeding ration. Her work demonstrates how innovation, sustainability and premium food production can work hand in hand.
Creating change beyond the farm gate
While Suzannah is proud of the business she has built, the contribution she values most extends well beyond her own brand.
She reflects on the introduction of intramuscular fat into Australia's national lamb grading standard as a defining milestone, validating years of advocacy for recognising eating quality in lamb in much the same way as premium beef. She is equally proud of helping create opportunities for processors and other businesses to develop higher-value branded products, demonstrating how one innovative idea can influence an entire sector.
Backing evidence over opinion
Suzannah's leadership philosophy is simple: back the evidence, not the applause.
"You don't need consensus to be right, you need data."
With a background in science and law, she believes meaningful change begins with curiosity, rigorous testing and the confidence to challenge accepted thinking.
Rather than relying on assumptions, she has consistently measured outcomes, refined processes and allowed evidence to demonstrate what is possible. It is an approach that has shaped both her business and her leadership, encouraging others to think differently and pursue innovation with confidence.
Turning challenges into opportunity
Like many businesses across the food industry, Suzannah faced significant disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With export markets and hospitality demand collapsing almost overnight, she made the difficult decision to pause operations rather than compromise the integrity of the business model.
Reflecting on that experience, she says:
"It taught me that admitting what I didn't yet have figured out built more trust with partners than pretending otherwise; and made me a more collaborative leader as a result."
After rebuilding the right partnerships, the business relaunched in 2025 and commenced exports to the United States in 2026.
Looking ahead
Suzannah believes Australia's meat industry has enormous potential to create greater value through innovation, collaboration and structural reform.
She is passionate about improving access to processing infrastructure for boutique meat brands and supporting an industry where differentiated products and entrepreneurial thinking can thrive. Her ambition is to help create an environment where premium branded meat businesses have the opportunity to succeed, strengthening every part of the supply chain—from producer through to consumer.
